Thursday, April 17, 2008 | Men's Tennis
University of Florida senior Greg Ouellette garnered Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year honors as the league announced the 2008 yearly awards Wednesday evening. In addition, freshman Alex Lacroix was named to the All-SEC Second-team.
Ouellette, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in the ITA singles poll, is the first Gator player under seventh-year head coach Andy Jackson to be named the player of the year. He joins Mark Merklein (1994), Jeff Morrison (1999) and Justin O'Neal (2000), previous Gator winners of the honor. Prior to coming to Gainesville, Coach Jackson produced a pair of SEC Players of the Year at Mississippi State in Marco Baron (2001) and Thomas Dupre (1997).
Ouellette defeated 16 ranked opponents in 2007-08. In addition to Ouellette's achievement, Lacroix was named to the second team. Lacroix posted a 7-4 record against SEC opponents in dual matches in 2008 and went 11-8 overall.
