26 players called into U-20 camp at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, California
GAINESVILLE, Florida - Freshman midfielder Mayra Pelayo is taking part in a U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team training camp next week at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California.
The U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team is beginning an almost year-long preparation for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup with a training camp in Los Angeles from January 3-10.
U.S. head coach Michelle French has named 26 players to this camp being held at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, California, with part of the event overlapping the full U.S. Women's National Team camp.
Last month, the USA claimed a World Cup berth by winning its semifinal match of the qualifying tournament against host Honduras and then defeated Canada 1-0 for the CONCACAF title. The eighth FIFA Women's World Cup is set for Nov. 13-Dec. 3, 2016 in Papua, New Guinea.
The World Cup 16-team field includes USA, Canada, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Japan, Korea DPR, Korea Republic, Ghana, Nigeria, Brazil, Venezuela, France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden.
Pelayo, a member of the 2015 Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team, started 12 matches at attacking midfield for the Gators. She turned in a goal and three assists for the Florida team which swept the SEC regular-season and tournament titles and reached the NCAA Round of 16. Pelayo has also been part of U-15 and U-17 national teams.
