Gators Show a Little More Defense in Scrimmage No. 2

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The concerns Mike White had about his Florida defense following last week's first scrimmage of the preseason were somewhat allayed after the second Friday. Somewhat.
Oh, there were still buckets being made — including 56 percent from the 3-point line — but after a week of making defense a point of emphasis and barely a day since installing some key elements of the press, White felt better about what he saw this time versus last.
Junior forward Devin Robinson, who had a sub-par scrimmage a week ago, went 8-for-9 from the floor, including four makes from deep, to lead all scorers with 23 points. It was an encouraging display six months removed from surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot. Senior point guard Kasey Hill had 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting, plus eight assists and no turnovers. His playmaking sidekick, junior Chris Chiozza, threw in 15 points, including 4-for-6 from long distance. Senior swingman Canyon Barry, the College of Charleston graduate transfer, finished with 11 points. Sophomore center Kevarrius Hayes went 5-for-6 from the floor and scored 11 points.
All told, the Gators went 43 of 86 for a field-goal percentage right at 50 percent.
"We didn't get into as good an offensive rhythm as the first scrimmage," White said. "Conversely, I thought we were much better on defense. Help side defense was better, and positionally overall [better]. We were just too good offensively our first scrimmage for where we are."
That was last week, when the Gators collectively shot 61.3 percent and bombed in 58.8 percent — making 20 of 34 — of their 3-point shots.
This time, with a trio of Southeastern Conference officials working the floor, UF did a better job of closing out the long balls, with just 25 attempts. The Gators made 14 of them, however.
White and his staff have put a premium on free-throw shooting this offseason, after finishing 12th (out of 14) in league play last season. In the previous scrimmage, the Gators went 16-for-21 (76.2 percent). This time: 15 of 24, for a 62.5 number just below last year's total.
