GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida women's tennis team shined in the first rounds of the 2016 ITA Southeast Regional Championships Presented by Oracle on Friday. The Gators are hosting the tournament that is played at UF's Ring Tennis Complex.
The teams of Anna Danilina and Spencer Liang, and Kourtney Keegan and Peggy Porter both started off strong in the doubles competition, winning their first respective matches 8-1. Josie Kuhlman and Belinda Woolcock also dominated their first match of the day, winning 8-4. All three doubles teams went on to defeat their opponents in the Round of 16 to advance to the Quarterfinals on Saturday morning.
The Gators breezed through the singles competition later in the day, each of them winning their first matches to advance to tomorrow's Round of 32.
Action continues on Friday morning at the Ring Tennis Complex, beginning with the doubles quarterfinals at 8:30 a.m.
Quoting Head Coach Roland Thornqvist:
On what he thought of the Gators' first day of competition:
"I thought we played really well. We did a lot of winning today, but even better than that, I thought we played really well. The doubles play was fantastic, from all three teams in all six matches we had four, maybe five games that were bad. The rest were aggressive, we made returns, put first serves in, I thought the doubles play was spectacular today."
