AT THE BUZZER
FLORIDA STATE 83, No. 21 FLORIDA 78
WHAT HAPPENED: FSU guard Dwayne Bacon scored 24 points, including 16 in the second half, and forward Terrence Mann added 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Seminoles held off the 21st-ranked Gators at Tucker Center in Tallahassee. The Seminoles used a 16-6 run early in the second half to break open a tie game. The Gators trailed by 13 midway through the period, but somehow clawed back to make it a one-possession game and had the ball in the final minute, but guard KeVaughn Allen missed a pull-up 3-point shot that would have tied the score and the Seminoles were able to hold off the visitors for yet another big win in the series. Senior point guard Kasey Hill led the Gators with a career-high 21 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the floor, plus three rebounds and three assists. Allen had 16 points, but was limited to just seven minutes in the first half after picking up three fouls. FSU shot 55.6 percent in the second half.
WHAT IT MEANS: The Gators have their first two-game losing streak of the season and have now lost three straight to the Seminoles in the series for the first time since 2006-08. The FSU crowded reminded UF of as such with a serenade of "JUST LIKE FOOTBALL" as the final seconds ticked away. Florida has acquitted itself well against the three best teams -- and highest RPI opponents -- it has faced (Gonzaga, Duke and FSU), but so-called "quality losses" wear thin. This would have been a good one to get on the road.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Safe to say the Gators have seen quite enough of Bacon, whose 24 points and jumpshot over Hill with 4.6 seconds remaining last year in Gainesville gave the Seminoles a two-point win. Bacon was projected as a first-round pick had he come out as a freshman last season. Word out of Tally is he's definitely gone after this year. He'll take 48 points in two games against UF with him.
STAGGERING STATISTIC: The last four Florida-Florida State games have been decided by a combined 10 points: 2013 - UF 67-66; 2014 - FSU 65-63; 2015 - FSU 73-71; 2016 - FSU 83-78.
UP NEXT: Florida (7-3) is off all week for exams, then returns to action Saturday against UNC-Charlotte (4-3) in the Gators' annual visit to Sunrise, Fla., and Orange Bowl Classic. The game will put UF on the court against a former in Gator in 49ers point guard Braxton Ogbueze, who was part of the 2012-13 freshman class but transferred to UNCC after one year.
