Florida's five honorees were tied for the second-most from any program in the country
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five Gators earned All-America honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association, with senior right side Alex Holston (second team) and junior middle blocker Rhamat Alhassan (third team) leading the group, the AVCA announced Wednesday (Dec. 14) morning.
Florida's five honorees were tied with Minnesota for the second-most nationally, trailing only Nebraska (six).
This is the third time in the last four years the Gators boast five AVCA All-America honorees. It is also the fifth consecutive year UF has at least four or more honorees.
With this year's honors, Alhassan and Holston become the fifth and sixth players in school history to earn spots on one of the three AVCA All-America teams three times in a career. The only other Gators to achieve the feat are Team USA Olympian Kelly Murphy (2008-11), Angie McGinnis (2005-07), Benavia Jenkins (2001-03), and Team Puerto Rico Olympian Aury Cruz (2001-03).
Alhassan was a first-team honoree in 2015 and second-team member as a freshman in 2014.
In addition to a first-team honor in 2014 and third-team accolade in 2015, Holston also earned an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention accolade as a freshman in 2013.
Three more Gators—Caroline Knop, Allie Monserez, and Carli Snyder—were recognized as AVCA All-America Honorable Mentions. It is the second such honor for Snyder, and the first for Knop and Monserez.
Individually, Alhassan was one of two players in the nation to rank in the top 15 in both hitting percentage and blocks per set. Holston checked in at 31st nationally in hitting percentage, 66th in kills per set, and 70th in points per set. Knop, a junior libero, finished the year ranked fourth in the SEC in digs per set. Monserez was the national leader in assists per set for the final 12 weeks of the year and the primary distributor for UF's offense, which broke the school record for hitting percentage with a nation-leading .338 clip. Snyder tallied a team-high 11 double-doubles, a figure that ranked tied for eighth among SEC players.
The five honorees helped the Gators to their 26th consecutive 25-win campaign, a share of their 22nd SEC title, and make their 26th straight NCAA Tournament appearance, tying the fourth-longest streak in Division I history.
