Sam Horsfield Named to Ben Hogan Award Watch List
Wednesday, February 10, 2016 | Men's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - University of Florida men's golfer Sam Horsfield was named to The Ben Hogan Award Watch List on Wednesday, the Colonial Country Club, the Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced. Horsfield is one of only two freshmen who appear on the 25-golfer list.
The Ben Hogan Award, presented by Konica Minolta, is awarded annually to the top men's college golfer. A selection committee votes to determine the honoree based on his performance in collegiate and amateur tournaments in the past year.
Ten semifinalists will be tabbed on April 13, and the group could include golfers not on the Watch List. Three finalists will be announced on May 3, with the winner crowned May 23 at an awards banquet.
Only one Gator has won the trophy in the award's 26-year history, as UF alum Matt Every earned the accolade in 2006. Since then, Billy Horschel made the cut to 10 semifinalists in 2007 and 2009, and Andres Echavarria did the same in 2011.
Horsfield is coming off of his first collegiate win at the Sea Best Invitational on Feb. 2. In amateur play, his notable achievements in the past year include earning a bid to compete in the U.S. Open, advancing to the Round of 32 in the U.S. Amateur, tying for fifth at the Terra Cotta Invitational, tying for fourth at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley Golf Club and making the quarterfinals at the Western Amateur.
