Sam Horsfield Earns Third SEC Honor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Capturing the individual title at the Southern Highlands Collegiate led University of Florida golfer Sam Horsfield to be selected as the SEC Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. It's his third conference accolade this spring, as he's been selected as an honoree after each of Florida's three spring tournaments.
Horsfield fired a 7-under 209 to collect a decisive four-stroke win at the Southern Highlands Collegiate last week. The victory marked his second individual title in the Gators' past three tournaments, his fourth consecutive top-three finish and his sixth top-five performance of the 2015-16 season.
The freshman carded rounds of 69-70-70 to extend his streak of posting nothing but even- or under-par rounds during the spring season. He defeated four of Golfweek's top six golfers and 11 Ben Hogan Award watch list members en route to capturing the title. His efforts led No. 2 Florida to a runner-up finish in an elite field that featured nine of Golfweek's top-20 teams and four of its top-five squads.
SEC Golfer of the Week went to Matthew NeSmith of South Carolina.
The Gators return to action Monday at the Valspar Collegiate in Palm City, Fla.
