JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – The No. 8 Florida women's golf team successfully defended its 2015 Briar's Creek Invitational team title on Tuesday in Johns Island, S.C. The Gators emerged victorious for the fifth time in their last six events, using a final-round score of 285 to best the 18-team field by 11 strokes. The Orange and Blue's 54-hole total of -6 (858) matched their season-best mark.
Freshman Sam Wagner led the team by carding a four-under 212 to finish tied for fifth, her second top-10 finish as a Gator. Junior Kelly Grassel recorded a season-best total of -3 (213), to tie for seventh, her second top-10 finish of the season. Junior Maria Torres finished tied for 13th at +1 (217), for her eighth top-25 finish of the season, a team-leading mark.
Frida Gustafsson Spang from East Carolina took home the individual trophy scoring -8 (208), at the par-72, 6,185-yard Golf Club at Briar's Creek.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
On the Gators' final-round play:
"We really had it going for a while today. It was fun to watch. The course was very scoreable this morning, and we took advantage of it. The wind picked up with about six holes left, and I thought we lost a little focus coming down the stretch, but we were able to close it out."
On winning their fifth team title of the season:
"The thing I was most proud of this week was the conversation the team was having after the round. They were already talking about the future and how we are going to get better. This is a motivated group, and they are so much fun to coach."
On Sam Wagner's fifth-place finish:
"I'm happy for Sam, she has been knocking on the door for a while now. It's great to see her have a nice finish, with all the hard work she's been putting in."
Freshman Sam Wagner:
On finishing tied for fifth:
"I thought it was a really good week, I shot four-under total, and I saw a lot of good things that I've been working on really hard the past couple months pay off. I felt pretty solid about it, there's still a lot of stuff to learn from, but that was pretty good. Overall, the tournament was really good and I'm very excited for how it went not just for me but for the whole team. It's always good to bring home the win."
