GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Two-time All-American Christen Westphal, who finished her Florida career last fall, signed today with the Boston Breakers of the National Women's Soccer League.
"Christen is a player that comes into the pro environment and can compete for a first-11 spot straight away," Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. "She will add competition to our defense, and I'm looking forward to working with her and improving her as a player."
As a senior, Westphal picked up Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors as she earned a spot on the All-SEC team each year of her collegiate career. She also was the 2015 SEC Tournament MVP with seven points earned over three matches – including registering game-winning goals off free kicks in semifinal and final matches. She earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America honors in 2013 and 2015, appearing on the first team as a senior.
She started all but the first match of her collegiate career. As a senior, Westphal led the Gators with 13 assists, which stood first in the SEC and tied for fourth in the nation. Her 19 points in 2015 is the most ever in a season by a UF defender.
Westphal recently joined the U.S. U-23 Women's National Team for the Istria Cup in Croatia. She started two of the three matches, helping the team win the table with a 2-0-1 record.
"I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity this program has given me," Westphal said. "I'm beyond excited to officially start my professional career as a Boston Breaker."
The Boston Breakers open the 2016 NWSL season on the road, facing the Washington Spirit on April 16. They open home action on Sunday, April 24 against Seattle Reign FC. The Seattle Reign roster contains another former Gator – Havana Solaun.
