GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The No. 15 University of Florida women's tennis team defeated the No. 57 Missouri Tigers, 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex. The Gators improve to 7-2 in the 2016 season and 2-0 in SEC play.
Florida grabbed the doubles point on Saturday morning with wins on one and two. The No. 7-ranked duo of Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan shut out No. 46-ranked Kelli Hine and Bea Santos. On court two, Belinda Woolcock and Josie Kuhlman were down 3-0 in their match. The Gators would take six of the next seven matches to clinch the doubles point and early advantage for the Orange and Blue.
In singles action, it was Kuhlman and Woolcock who pushed the advantage to 3-0 in the Gators' favor with 6-2, 6-0 wins on their respective courts. For the first time this season, it was sophomore Peggy Porter who clinched the match victory for Florida. The Dallas, Texas native defeated Missouri's Clare Raley, 6-3, 6-2 on court six.
Up next, the Gators continue their SEC home stand with No. 17 Kentucky on Thursday at 5 p.m. and reigning NCAA Champions, Vanderbilt on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Coach Thornqvist's Thoughts
On the match today…
"I thought we played okay. It was a little creaky in doubles, I felt. Obviously not on court one, they were solid from start to finish. Two, we started a bit slow and were down 3-love through the first three games. That is always going to be tough just playing to six with no-ad scoring. Three, we were up in the beginning and maybe let off of the gas a little bit. Overall, doubles I think we were so-so.
Singles was really good. We are starting to roll the ball more when we should and not just go for it all the time. That is going to be much better for us with the temperature and the humidity is changing. You need to be able to roll and get the ball up. We worked on it in practice the last couple of weeks. It was hard to do in California last week because the pace of play was higher. Courts were faster. Now, we are in SEC country and we need to be able to run and use our legs. Today, I thought we did a really good job with that."
