GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Senior captain of the No. 13 University of Florida men's tennis team, Diego Hidalgo, was named the SEC Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
Hidalgo was stellar in both singles and doubles play in the Gators' three matches last week. The Guayaquil, Ecuador native defeated three ranked singles players and topped two Top-5 doubles tandems in a span of five days. Hidalgo and doubles partner Gordon Watson clinched the doubles point against No. 3 Virginia and No. 7 Georgia with wins over the No. 2 and No. 4-ranked pairings, respectively.
Hidalgo defeated two Top-25 singles opponents on his way to a 3-0 week on the singles courts. The Gator captain has won seven of his last eight matches, six of which have come against ranked opponents. In the 2016 dual match season, Hidalgo has amassed 14 wins, including an 8-2 record in SEC play.
The Gator senior and doubles partner, Watson, will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex. The match against the Tennessee Volunteers is set for 1 p.m. with senior day festivities beginning at 12:45 p.m.
