Florida to Face Duke at Madison Square Garden in Jimmy V Classic
Wednesday, April 27, 2016 | Men's Basketball
The Gators return to the Garden for the first time since 2013.
The Gators will travel to New York City to face Duke in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Florida and Duke will be the back end of the doubleheader, which will also feature Purdue vs. Arizona State at 7 p.m.
"We're excited for the Gators to be part of the Jimmy V Classic next season," said head coach Mike White. "This is not only one of the premier events in college basketball, but it obviously also supports an important cause, so it's an honor for us to compete and I know our guys will be thrilled for the opportunity to play at Madison Square Garden."
This will mark UF's first game at the famed Garden since defeating Memphis in the 2013 Jimmy V Classic, a game that was the second win in Florida's historic 30-game winning streak that season.
The Gators are 4-12 all-time vs. Duke, but this will be the first meeting between the two since Florida downed then-No. 1 Duke in the Sweet 16 of the 2000 NCAA Tournament, 87-78, in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Dec. 6 date vs. Duke is the first game on the Gators' 2016-17 schedule where the date and opponent are both known. Florida already has the Advocare Invitational in Orlando from Nov. 24-27 on its schedule. Both events will be part of a barnstorming non-conference schedule as the $64.5 million renovation of the O'Connell Center continues through December.
