GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Florida sophomores Alex Faedo, Dalton Guthrie, Mike Rivera and JJ Schwarz have accepted invitations to join the 2016 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and will be part of the 24-player squad that will play a two-month tour in June and July.
Faedo, a right-handed pitcher from Tampa, Fla., has been dominant at times in 2016 for Florida. As the Gators' normal Sunday starter, he has compiled a 9-1 record with a 3.11 earned run average. He ranks in the top 15 nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.58) and strikeouts-per-nine-innings (12.29). He has recorded double-digit strikeouts four times on the season, including 10 in his last outing at Tennessee in which he went seven innings and allowed just one run.
Guthrie, a shortstop from Sarasota, Fla., is second on the squad with a .320 batting average this season. He has held down the leadoff spot all season and leads the team with 64 hits. His work on defense has been equally impressive, committing just five errors in 48 games as the Gators' everyday shortstop.
This is the second Team USA selection for Rivera, a catcher from Venice, Fla. Rivera .364 in 12 games with a home run and 11 RBI during his time with the 18U National Team in 2013. This year for Florida, he is hitting .274 and ranks second on the team with 44 RBI and eight home runs. Last weekend, he hit a pair of home runs in the series win at Tennessee and had a career-high four RBI in the win over the Vols on Sunday.
Schwarz, a designated hitter and catcher from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., is making his third appearance with Team USA. Last year, he joined A.J. Puk, Buddy Reed and Logan Shore on the Collegiate National Team and appeared in 11 games. Schwarz also played on the 18U National Team back in 2013 and hit .333 through 10 games with nine RBI. This season for the Gators, Schwarz has been a rock in the middle of the lineup and is batting .291 with 42 RBI and six home runs. He's also drawn a team-high 35 walks on the year.
The Collegiate National Team will assemble on June 27 in Los Angeles for training. In 2016, Team USA will have the opportunity to travel to Chinese Taipei, Japan and Cuba to participate in international friendship series
