Gators Still Lurking Thanks to Massive Personal Records on Day Two of SEC Outdoors
Saturday, May 14, 2016 | Track and Field
Florida will have 17 scoring opportunities on the women’s side and 21 on the men’s side on Saturday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Florida track and field program's second day at the SEC Outdoor Championships was headlined by a trio of massive personal records and eight Gators who qualified for Saturday (May 14) finals.
Early in the afternoon, redshirt junior javelin thrower Marija Vucenovic posted a mark of 57.81 meters, the No. 3-ranked mark on UF's all-time outdoor top 10, to take runner-up honors and tally eight points for the women's team. The mark was also 1.08 meters farther than her previous personal record, which ranked fourth in school history.
The other two stunning personal records came from Mark Mutz and Amber Johnson.
Not expected to score in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Mutz topped his previous PR by nearly 17 seconds to take seventh place and hang two points on the board for the men. His time of 8:54.88 was a mere 0.54 seconds off the program's all-time top 10. In the women's 1,500 meters prelims, Amber Johnson PRed for a second consecutive meet, clocking in at 4:21.77, the fourth-fastest time of the preliminary heats.
UF's other scorers were KeAndre Bates, the third-place finisher in the long jump for a second straight year, and Lloydricia Cameron, who took fifth in the shot put.
In the team standings, the Gators' 18 points on the men's side are 28 off the pace set by No. 6 Georgia, while the women own 22 points and trail No. 2 Arkansas by that exact number. Florida will have 17 scoring opportunities on the women's side and 21 on the men's side on the third and final day of competition.
Live streaming of day three will be provided by SEC Network + via Watch ESPN. Saturday's (May 14) coverage will begin at 4 p.m. ET. A two-hour replay of the event will be televised by ESPN2 at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday (May 15).

HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
On the overall assessment of UF's scoring on day two…
"Overall, it was a good day. You start at the top of the list with Marija Vucenovic and the huge PR she had to get second in the javelin. KeAndre (Bates) comes through and gets third in the long jump. Not quite what he wanted, but we're getting closer to where we need to be. Yanis David's been battling some problems, so for her to come through and get sixth (in the long jump) as a freshman is a great job by her.
"I can't say enough about Mark Mutz in the steeplechase tonight—17-second personal best and just outside of our all-time top 10. Phenomenal job by him and Coach (Paul) Spangler. Just extremely proud of him. Lloydricia Cameron finishing fifth in a very senior-heavy shot put, I was proud of her as well."
On his assessment of UF's qualifying races on day two…
"I thought we qualified ok. The 100 with Ryan and Kyra, the 400 with Arman, Najee, and Robin, and then Yanick getting in the (110-meter) hurdles. And another person running really out of her mind right now is Amber Johnson. A year ago, she was a 4:38 girl, now she's 4:21 (in the 1,500 meters). A little disappointed in the 400 meters group. We did not do what we are very capable of doing.
"I challenged the whole team tonight to come out here and do better tomorrow. Everybody on the team, when we put the uniform on, we need to come out and have some pride. Certain areas tonight, we didn't do that, and that's just not acceptable.
On Ryan Clark qualifying for the 100 meters final as a freshman…
"Ryan made a couple mistakes, but he was very motivated after last night's 200. He told me, 'Coach, I'll do better today.' And he did. Now we have to come back tomorrow, fix the couple little issues he had, and get better. I'm positive he will. I'm very confident Ryan will run very well tomorrow. He's a competitor, and he told me this is why he came here.
"Everybody that qualified today (were) the people that put on the uniform and made an effort to do what the coaches asked them to do, things went well. The people who didn't trust, the people who didn't believe, things didn't go well for them."
On KeAndre Bates' second consecutive top-three finish in the long jump…
"The thing with KeAndre is that he's a lot faster than he's been, so he's having a little problem timing up the jump. But he's getting closer. Now we've just got to go back and keep working. He's still young, still got a lot of improving to do, and I know one of his goals is to be in the top three in the country. Very proud of him as he continues to get better and better.
On what it's like watching those huge personal records in a championship meet like this…
"Those kind of performances give me chills, because that's who we are. That's what this program has been built on: having the guts, having the drive, having the passion to show up at the championship meets and do your best. It was absolutely amazing. We need to see a lot more of that tomorrow."

2016 SEC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS NOTES
- KeAndre Bates is the third jumper since 2007 to post top-three finishes in the long jump as both a freshman and sophomore, joining Arkansas' Raymond Higgs (2011-12) and Alain Bailey (2007-08) as the only others to do so during that span
- Ryan Clark is the first Gator freshman to qualify for the 100 meters final since Jeff Demps did so back in 2009
- Clark is also one of six freshmen to qualify for the 100 meters final in the last four SEC Outdoor Championships
- This is the fourth consecutive year and seventh time since 2007 the Gators boast at least two men's 400 meters finalists
- This also marks the third time both Najee Glass and Arman Hall qualified for the 400 meters final, as both also did so in 2013 and 2015
- Florida's three finalists in the 400-meter hurdles are the most in the event since Ole Miss had three in 2011
- The Gators are also just the third team since 2005 to have three 400-meter hurdles finalists, joining Georgia (2007), South Carolina (2008), and Ole Miss (2011) as the only other teams to do it
- Anders Eriksson joined Georgia's Alex Poursanidis as the only freshman since 2006 to win the SEC title in the hammer throw
- Eriksson's winning mark of 69.62 meters (228 feet, 5 inches) was the farthest SEC title-winning throw since 2010, when LSU's Walter Henning won with a top mark of 237 feet, 3 inches
- Anders Eriksson, hammer throw – Third title in program history, second SEC freshman to win the event since 2006
