Gators Punch Six Tickets to Eugene on Opening Day of NCAA Championships East Preliminary
Thursday, May 26, 2016 | Track and Field
Fourteen Gators also advanced to the finals of their respective events
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida track and field program opened the NCAA Championships East Preliminary in spectacular fashion, as six Gators punched tickets to Eugene, Ore. and another 14 advanced to the finals of their respective events on Thursday (May 26) at Hodges Stadium.
Redshirt junior javelin thrower Marija Vucenovic took the region's top qualifying spot with a mark of 52.90 meters. The Serbian will make the third NCAA Championships appearance of her career in roughly two weeks.
Freshman Anders Eriksson and redshirt senior Jayla Bostic secured spots for the men's and women's hammer throw competitions in Eugene. Eriksson is the first UF freshman hammer thrower since at least 2002 to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Bostic, a two-time indoor All-American in the weight throw, is the first Gator women's hammer thrower since 2006 (Jyn Wynn) to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The men's and women's long jump competitions saw three Gators book trips to the Beaver State.
Sophomore Darrielle McQueen became the first Gator since Shara Proctor (2008-10) to make consecutive NCAA Championships in the event, while Yanis David joins McQueen as the only other UF freshman since at least 2002 to qualify. This is the first time since at least 2002 two Gators advanced to the NCAA Championships women's long jump.
On the men's side, sophomore KeAndre Bates will make his first NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance.
Six of UF's 14 NCAA East Preliminary qualifiers came from the men's and women's 400 meters races. All four men's entries—Kunle Fasasi, Najee Glass, Hugh Graham Jr., Arman Hall—earned automatic berths to Friday's (May 27) final. Robin Reynolds posted the top overall time (51.87) and Sharrika Barnett placed fourth (52.26) to move on for the women.
Friday's events will begin at 12 p.m. ET, while the third and final day will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET on Saturday (May 28).

HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head Coach Mike Holloway on the UF's performance on the first day of the NCAA Championships East Preliminary…
"Just a phenomenal day. Phenomenal efforts across the board. We've been talking a lot about focus, a lot about pride, a lot about passion. What you saw more than anything today was (the team) trusting what we do. (We had) a lot of individual meetings with athletes about trusting the race plans and things like that. It was just a great night. It was really fun to watch the Gators tonight."
On the six finals qualifiers in the men's and women's 400 meters races…
"We've talked to that group a lot. They're very fit, and haven't been performing up to their fitness level. We sat down and talked through some things. What you saw tonight, and what you're going to see moving forward, everybody went out and executed the plan the way it's supposed to be done. They get it now. The big thing we can't do is rest on tonight, go back to the hotel and think we made it; we've got to come back and duplicate those efforts tomorrow, because everybody else is going to turn up their intensity level. We need to turn ours up also."
On the three jumpers and three throwers who punched tickets to Eugene…
"Again, a lot of talented athletes, talented coaches, and a lot of trust in those groups today. Sometimes people come into this meet and put pressure on themselves. It's tough in the jumps and throws, only getting three attempts. People panic. But it's the same thing you have to do in a regular meet to get to the final, so that's the way we looked at it. Very proud of Anders, very proud of all the jumpers and Coach (Nic) Petersen). Big for Jayla Bostic to make it as a fifth-year senior. And Marija (Vucenovic) was Marija; she got on the runway and got better and better each throw."
