Gators’ Torres Named SEC Women’s Golfer of Year
Tuesday, May 3, 2016 | Women's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Florida women's golfer Maria Torres was named the 2016 SEC Player of the Year, the league announced Tuesday. Junior Karolina Vlckova and sophomore Taylor Tomlinson picked up Second Team All-SEC honors and freshman Sam Wagner was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team, while junior Kelly Grassel represents UF on the SEC Community Service Team.
Torres became just the seventh Gator in program history to claim the SEC Individual title on April 17th and owns the best scoring average among SEC golfers with a 71.83. Torres' Player of the Year honor marks the first time a UF women's golfer has won the award since Lisa Hackney earned the accolade in 1990.
The No. 6 Gators won an NCAA-leading six tournament titles during the 2015-16 regular season, in which Torres and Tomlinson each picked up a pair of individual victories and Grassel won a share of the Florida Challenge title.
Vlckova, Tomlinson and Wagner each competed in the Gators' lineup at every event this season, with Vlckova leading the team with six top-10 finishes. While Torres and Tomlinson picked up SEC All-Freshman honors during their respective freshman seasons, it is the first conference honor for Vlckova and Wagner.
Head Coach Emily Glaser Says: "It's an honor for these young ladies to be recognized by the SEC for their many accomplishments this year. We could not have accomplished what we have without every member of our team, so although these awards name specific players, we couldn't have accomplished what we did without the collective effort of the group. This shows the depth we have on our team and the amount of effort our team has put in to improve since a year ago."
