Horsfield Named PING First-Team All-American
Tuesday, May 31, 2016 | Men's Golf
EUGENE, Ore. – Sam Horsfield was named a PING First-Team All-American, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Tuesday. Horsfield is the only freshman among the 10 honorees.
Horsfield tied for 22nd at the NCAA Championship this week to conclude his freshman campaign with 12 top-25 finishes in 13 tournaments. Horsfield won three events (Sea Best Invitational, Mason Rudolph Championship and Southern Highlands Collegiate) and placed in the top five eight times, including a streak of four-straight top-three performances.
The honor joins a lengthy list of accolades for the Davenport, Fla., native, who was added to the PING All-Southeast Region Team and selected as the SEC Freshman of the Year. Horsfield's top-five finish at the SEC Championship helped add his name to the First Team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman Team as well. A semifinalist for both the Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan awards, Horsfield was selected to compete for Team Europe at the Arnold Palmer Cup in June. His 2015-16 stroke average of 70.55 broke Camilo Villegas' school record for lowest single-season stroke average (in records dating back to 1981-82).
