Five University of Florida baseball players were recognized on Wednesday as some of the best in the nation by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and D1baseball.com.
Junior first baseman Peter Alonso was named a First Team All-American by both outlets. After missing 10 games with a broken hand, Alonso returned in NCAA postseason play and has sparked the Gators' offense. He has batted .520 (13-25) with four doubles, four home runs and 11 RBI in six NCAA Tournament games. On the season, he is hitting .373 with 13 home runs and 58 RBI.
Starting pitcher Logan Shore also earned First Team honors. Shore has set numerous records this season and was named the 2016 Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year. He has won 16 straight decisions and picked up his sixth NCAA postseason win last weekend, a new school record. Shore has an impressive 2.24 earned run average to go along with his perfect 12-0 record.
Closer Shaun Anderson earned First Team All-America recognition from the NCBWA and Third Team honors from D1baseball.com. Anderson currently has 13 saves on the season and will set a new school record with one more save. His 1.00 earned run average is the best in school history since the introduction of aluminum bats in 1974.
Sophomores JJ Schwarz and Alex Faedo were named to the NCBWA All-America Third Team. Schwarz leads the team with 60 RBI on the season and has a .295 batting average. Last week, his grand slam against Florida State in game three propelled the Gators to a victory and berth in the College World Series.
Faedo leads the nation with 13 wins on the season. He has a 3.25 earned run average with a 13-2 record and team-best 124 strikeouts. Faedo ranks among the best in the country in strikeouts per nine innings (13th, 11.51) and strikeout to walk ratio (20th, 5.90).
