“I’m not surprised at all she did that. I’m proud of her, and I’m proud she’s a representative of our program.” --Steve Lemke, UF associate head coach/throws coach
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore thrower Lloydricia Cameron has been named one of the three recipients of the 2015-16 Southeastern Conference Sportsmanship Award, the league office announced on Thursday (June 16).
This year's honorees—Cameron, LSU football's Leonard Fournette, and the Kentucky volleyball team and support staff—were selected by a vote of the SEC's 14 Directors of Athletics.
"We are proud of Leonard, Lloydricia, and the Kentucky volleyball program for setting a standard of sportsmanship and exhibiting that spirit that lives in the heart of SEC student-athletes, coaches, and staff members," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a release.
At this year's Tom Jones Memorial Invitational, Cameron was credited with a mark of 57.11 meters in the discus throw. Florida's social media accounts posted a graphic with the mark, noting it was the No. 2-ranked throw in program history. Cameron saw the graphic and immediately went to UF's throws coach, associate head coach Steve Lemke, informing him the mark was incorrect.
The throw of 57.11 was in fact a foul, and Cameron insisted her mark be changed to her next-furthest throw, which was 55.14 meters, the No. 3-ranked mark in school history.
"That speaks to her character, and her upbringing," Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. "Very proud of her for doing the right thing and not taking claim to a mark that was incorrect."
"I'm not surprised at all she did that," Lemke said. "She's extremely honest, and that speaks to her as a person. We see that in other ways too, daily, because she always does the right thing, even when no one is watching. I'm proud of her, and I'm proud she's a representative of our program."
Cameron joins women's tennis player Joanna Mather (2012) and women's golfer Jessica Yadloczky (2008) as the only other Gators to receive the honor in the award's nine-year history.
