“I’m truly blessed to receive this award, which is a testament to all the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes and coaching staff. I’m thankful to them for trusting and believing in me." --Mike Holloway, UF head coach
NEW ORLEANS – University of Florida track and field head coach Mike Holloway has been named the National Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced on Thursday (June 16).
This is the third such honor for Holloway, who also earned the award following UF's outdoor national titles in 2012 and 2013.
"It's an incredible honor," Holloway said. "I'm truly blessed to receive this award, which is a testament to all the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes and coaching staff. I'm thankful to them for trusting and believing in me."
Following a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships and a sixth-place finish at the SEC Outdoor Championships, Holloway and the Gators rebounded to win the program's third NCAA Outdoor Championships crown on June 10.
By doing so, UF became just the third team since 1992 to win the outdoor national title after finishing outside the top five at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier in the year. The Gators were also the first team in history to win the title after finishing outside the top five at the SEC Outdoor Championships. Moreover, this year's team is the only outdoor national champion since at least 1965 that finished lower than fourth at their conference meet.
UF's outdoor national title was its third since 2012 and sixth overall national championship since 2010, both of which are Division I-leading totals during their respective timeframes.
The title also extended Florida's run of consecutive top-three finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to eight, tying UTEP (1975-82) for the fourth-longest streak in history.
In addition to the team victory, Holloway guided senior Arman Hall (400 meters) and redshirt junior Eric Futch (400-meter hurdles) to individual titles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Their performances marked the fifth consecutive year in which the Gators collected multiple individual and/or relay championships, successfully extending the nation's longest active streak.
