Horsfield, Handrigan Set for Arnold Palmer Cup
Thursday, June 23, 2016 | Men's Golf
FORMBY, England – The University of Florida men's golf team will be represented on both sides of the competition this week at the 20th Annual Arnold Palmer Cup at Formby Golf Club. UF associate head coach John Handrigan will coach Team USA, while Gator freshman Sam Horsfield will compete for Team Europe.
The three-day Arnold Palmer Cup begins on Friday and is a Ryder Cup-style collegiate event. Teams USA and Europe are each comprised of 10 golfers, with the top six golfers in the final Arnold Palmer Cup standings automatically qualifying for their respective teams. Team Europe added two committee selections, a coaches' pick and the winner of the The R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament, while Team USA supplemented the automatic qualifiers with three committee selections and a coaches' pick. Horsfield earned his spot by landing atop the final Team Europe rankings in April.
Play at the Palmer Cup opens on Friday with matches of foursomes beginning at 2:30 a.m. EST, followed by afternoon four-ball matches starting at 8:30 a.m. EST. The weekend will consist of singles matches beginning at 4 a.m. EST on Saturday and Sunday. The full schedule can be viewed here. Scoring will be available on ArnoldPalmerCup.com.
The honor of being selected for the international competition is the latest in a long list of accolades for Horsfield, who competed in the U.S. Open last week. Horsfield was tabbed a member of the All-Nicklaus Team and selected as a Golfweek First-Team All-American earlier this week. The recipient of both the Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman and SEC Freshman of the Year awards, he was previously named a PING First-Team All-American and chosen to the GCAA All-Freshman Team, PING All-Southeast Region Team, First Team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman Team.
Recent Arnold Palmer Cup participants from UF include Bank Vongvanij (2011), Tyson Alexander (2010), Billy Horschel (2008 and 2007) and Matt Every (2005 and 2004). Team USA is the reigning Palmer Cup champion, as it defeated Europe 18-12 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., last year. USA leads the all-time series 10-8-1.
Team USA Assistant Coach John Handrigan
On what he's most looking forward to:
"There is nothing better in sport like representing the Gators and the USA. Getting to know the players on the team, who are all the top-ranked players in college golf, and learning why they are so successful will help me become a better coach, and I can bring some of these ideas back to Gainesville."
On the value of the experience for the participating golfers:
"It shows how valuable the experience is that several of these players held off turning pro so they could represent the USA in this prestigious event. Golf is recognized as an individual sport and these players will spend their professional careers playing for themselves, so when they get the opportunity to play for their school or country, they relish the opportunity."
Team Europe Member Sam Horsfield
His thoughts entering the Palmer Cup:
"I'm looking forward to representing my country and playing at a great event."
On how the format is unique for college golf:
"I'm really excited to play match play and especially play in a different format to the standard stroke play."
On the opportunity to compete in the international event:
"I think getting the experience from playing in this great event and against great competition like this will benefit me in the future."
