Ryan Clark and the men's 4x100 relay team qualified for the final and broke 39 seconds for the first time this year.
Gators Within Striking Distance Following Impressive NCAA Championships Opener
Thursday, June 9, 2016 | Track and Field
Florida's seven finals qualifiers from preliminary were the second-most of any team on Wednesday
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Florida men's track and field team donned brand-new uniforms and made plenty of highlights in their fresh apparel, as seven of its nine entries advanced to finals and both of its field competitors combined for 10 points to open the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday (June 8).
Five of UF's finalists will be in two events, with three Gators joining a very small, elite group.
Florida qualified all three of its 400 meters entries—Kunle Fasasi, Najee Glass, Arman Hall—to Friday's (June 10) final. The group is just the third trio in history to all advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships final, joining the 1942 and 1946 USC teams as the only others to accomplish the feat.
The No. 2 Gators also saw 400-meter hurdlers Eric Futch and TJ Holmes extend their campaigns. Futch posted the fastest time by a collegian this year (49.07), improving upon his No. 4-ranked time on UF's all-time top 10. Holmes also improved upon his UF all-time top 10 time (49.70).
They are the first pair of Division I teammates since 2011, and only the third UF duo since 1983 to both advance to the final.
Hammer thrower Anders Eriksson was the first of UF's two scorers. Eriksson nabbed four points with his fifth-place finish. The Swede also became just the seventh freshman since 1983 to score and throw 70-plus meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
KeAndre Bates capped the night with six points in the long jump, finishing third with a top mark of 7.82 meters.
The sophomore is just the fourth UF underclassman to score in the long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since 1949. Of that group, Bates and Dion Bentley (1990) are the only two who recorded top-three finishes. Those two and Mike Morrison (2005) are the only three to eclipse 7.80 meters at the national meet as underclassmen during that span. Prior to Bates' performance, Christian Taylor (2010) was the last UF underclassman to score in the event at NCAA Outdoors.
Men's finals will be held on Friday, while women's events will take place on Thursday (June 9) and Saturday (June 11).
Live television coverage will be provided by ESPN and ESPNU, in addition to online streaming available via Watch ESPN. Broadcast times and information can be found below.

HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
On UF's performance on day one of the men's championships…
"Thought we had a phenomenal day. I feel bad for Yanick Hart; he's been battling a groin injury and that's prevented him from being at his best, but he gave a great effort. Ryan Clark ran his best time of the year, at the national championships, as a freshman, I thought he did a great job.
"Anders (Eriksson) coming in as a freshman and being fourth overall; KeAndre (Bates) being KeAndre, getting after it and getting third, I thought it was a great job. But the day is done. Again, phenomenal day today, really pleased, never satisfied, as always. But we've got to come back and be even more focused on Friday than we were today."
On Kunle Fasasi, Najee Glass, and Arman Hall becoming the third trio of 400 meters finalists in meet history…
"Those are three very talented guys. If you ask them, or you ask me or anyone else on our staff, they'll tell you we expected those guys to make the final. Very proud of them. That's an unbelievable accomplishment. But we can't get satisfied. That's a wonderful thing, but at the end of the day, we've got to keep our focus and come back out here and do it again on Friday."
On the pair of 400-meter hurdles qualifiers…
"The big thing with them is that there's a very big focus with those two guys. Eric Futch is just in a zone right now, and we've got to find a way to keep him there. I've loved their passion, I've loved their work, and they're really listening to Coach (Adrain) Mann and myself and what we're asking them to do."
