Four-time U.S. National Team member Alyssa Baumann is deferring enrollment at the University of Florida until fall 2017. She injured her left elbow while training for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. She will use the next year to focus on rehabilitation and recovery so she can join the Gators for the 2018 season.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Incoming freshman gymnast Alyssa Baumann will defer enrolling at the University of Florida until the fall of 2017.
Baumann, one of the bright stars among the Gators' signing class announced last November, will use the year to focus on recovering from an injury. She qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials after taking seventh in the P&G Championships, but suffered an injury to her left elbow on June 29 as she prepared for the Trials.
She has undergone surgery to repair the injury and will use the year to rehabilitate and recover. Baumann now plans to enroll at UF in the fall of 2017 and begin competing for the Gators for the 2018 season.
"I am looking forward to competing as a Gator. Unfortunately, my elbow injury will prevent me from competing next year. Therefore, I am going to focus 100 percent on my rehabilitation so I can return to my gymnastics at the level I know I am capable of. I have always been a very motivated and competitive athlete and I plan to use these characteristics throughout my recovery," Baumann said. "I will be cheering the team on this season, and can't wait to join them for the next one! Go Gators!"
Baumann is a four-time U.S. National Team member, including three U.S. Senior National Teams (2016-17, 2015-16, 2014-15). She competed for the 2014 U.S. Senior National Team that claimed gold at the World Championships.
"Although we will miss having Alyssa's personality and presence this upcoming season, we support her choice. We know she will be cheering and following the Gators while she is in Texas working on her return. Alyssa has a lot of hard work ahead of her, but she is totally focused on returning to competition. With that mindset, we know she'll be successful. We look forward to having her join the Gators officially in the fall of 2017," said Florida Head Gymnastics Coach Jenny Rowland.
