Strong Men: How Do You Start Your Friday?
Thursday, July 21, 2016 | Men's Basketball, Chris Harry
UF basketball team is halfway through its brutal (and annual) 'Summer B' conditioning.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — How do you start your Friday? Here's how Florida basketball players have started theirs the last few weeks.
The Summer "B" term is halfway over, which means the Gators are halfway through the most intense part of their offseason program under the watch of strength/conditioning coordinator Preston Greene and assistants Blake Bender and Jon Uribe. Coaches love to talk about how games are won in the offseason. That's true, of course, relative to preparation and skill development.
But it's also when bodies change.
Each September, when the team is set to enter its preseason regimen, I do a blog that features Before-After photos illustrating the dramatic changes select players undergo. Remember Casey Prather? Will Yeguete? Jake Kurtz?
There will be 2016 versions, believe me. Wait till you see redshirt freshman Keith Stone, for example. Or Kevarrius Hayes.
The above video is a mere fraction of what goes on in the UF basketball weight room (or in this case, outside the weight room), but it's how Greene ends each week during Summer "B."
It's called "Strongman" and it entails:
- Tire Flip — Flipping a 400-pound tire for 10 repetitions.
- Farmer's Walk — Carrying two 100-pound torpedos for 50 feet and back.
- Car Pull — Pulling, while seated, a rope attached to a Ford Focus for 125 feet.
- Truck Push — Pushing a Nissan Frontier in the alley behind the basketball facility, past the tennis courts and to the law school parking lot almost 70 yards (on a slight incline, no less).
Anyway, this Friday will mark the fourth "Strongman" go-around. So after that, they'll be more than halfway home.
And bigger for it.
