Gak Cleared to Enroll, Not Play in 2016-17

The 6-foot-11 freshman from Australia will be allowed to practice with the team this season.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Center Gorjok Gak has been cleared for fall enrollment at the University of Florida, but the NCAA has ruled he will not be eligible for competition during his 2016-17 freshman season.
Gak, a 6-foot-11, 205-pounder from Australia by way of Bradenton (Fla.) Victory Rock Prep, will be allowed to practice and take part in basketball-related activities outside of games. If he meets his progress marks this year, he will be cleared to play for the '17-18 season with three seasons of eligibility left.
Fall classes begin at UF Aug. 22, with Gak arriving a few days earlier for freshman orientation.
A late addition to Coach Mike White's second incoming recruiting class, Gak signed with the Gators in April after being released from the national letter-of-intent he signed with Oklahoma State last November. He asked out of the letter after the Cowboys fired Travis Ford after the '15-16 season and chose UF over Arizona State.
Gak was rated a four-star prospect by Scout.com. He averaged 13.8 point and 9.3 rebounds this past season and has a 7-foot-4 wingspan and good basketball instincts, especially on the defensive end. While he won't be available for front court depth this season, the ability to practice, be introduced to the system and — most importantly — get in the weight room with strength/conditioning coordinator Preston Greene figures to be a huge plus in his development.
