Kerron Clement won his first individual Olympic gold medal Thursday
RIO DE JANEIRO – Kerron Clement (USA) claimed Olympic gold in the 400 hurdles final Thursday (Aug. 18) morning, increasing the Gators' medal count to nine, and their gold medal total to six.
Kelly Murphy and Team USA volleyball lost a five-set heartbreaker to Serbia in Olympic Games semifinal action Thursday afternoon (25-20, 17-25, 21-25, 25-16, 13-15) at the Maracanãzinho arena. Medal hopes are still alive for the Americans, who will play the loser of China vs. Netherlands Saturday in the Bronze-Medal Match.

- Sandra Gal, competing for Germany, struggled in the Second Round, carding a three-over 74 to sit tied for 43rd on the leaderboard.
- Gal will be back in action on Friday for the Third Round at 7:25 A.M. ET.
- The overall leader after the Second Round is Inbee Park (South Korea) with a -10 (132).
- Competition will span from August 17-20, and consists of 72 holes of individual stroke play. Scores are cumulative from round to round with all competitors playing 72 holes. There is no 36-hole cut. The golfer with the lowest aggregate score wins. In the event of a tie for first, second or third place, a play-off or multiple play-offs shall be conducted for the purpose of determining the gold, silver and bronze medal winners.

Track & Field
- Kerron Clement (USA) became the seventh man in American history to win multiple medals in the 400 hurdles. Clement, who won an Olympic gold medal with USA's 4x400 relay and a silver medal in the 400 hurdles at the 2008 Olympics, entered Thursday's final with two world titles in the 400 hurdles, but finally achieved a career-long goal of nabbing Olympic gold in his primary event.
- Stipe Zunic (Croatia), making his Olympic debut, finished eighth overall in the shot put qualifying round and went on to take 11th place in the final. Zunic is the first Croatian in Olympic history to throw in the shot put final.
- Kemal Mesic (Bosnia) finished 30th overall in shot put qualifying and did not advance to the final.
Volleyball
- Kelly Murphy delivered six kills and one block for seven points in Thursday's semifinal loss against Serbia. Down 2-1, the Americans tied the match at 2-2 with a dominating 25-16 fourth set. Serbia pulled out the nailbiter in the fifth, 15-13, to advance to the Gold-Medal Match. The Americans will play either China or the Netherlands for bronze Saturday.
