Steve Spurrier's big day will include his rendition of the famous chant.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — So, do you know the Mr. Two Bits routine?
"What?" Steve Spurrier shot back incredulously from behind his desk. "You mean, 'Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar! All for the Gators stand up and holler?' "
OK, so the question wasn't phrased particularly well.
Of course, the greatest Gator of them all would know the celebrated George Edmondson cheer. From back in his playing days more than a half-century ago, Spurrier watched Edmondson dash energetically through the stadium, blowing his whistle and getting the Florida Field crowd going. In fact, when Spurrier arrived as a UF freshman in 1964, Edmondson was in his 15th season doing his "Two Bits" deal.
But with the famous chant, comes some body movement. Yes, a so-called "routine." And the crowd that files in for Saturday night's season opener against Massachusetts — the one on hand when the title "Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium" is officially dedicated — will be expecting to see the Heisman Trophy quarterback and winningest coach in UF history make some Edmondson-like moves.
Errict Rhett did it. So did the likes of Danny Wuerffel, Chris DiMarco, Hannah Rogers, Alex Brown and Thaddeus Bullard since the pre-game celebrity Mr. Two Bits tradition was born in 2013.
For this game, could there be any other choice to do the honors?
And execute the routine?
"Sure, I'll do a little something," Spurrier said. "I may have to wind it up like I did when Terry Jackson scored his touchdown against FSU [in the national championship game]."
Yeah, that'll work.
