Alhassan, Monserez Garner Weekly Honors Leading into SEC Play

Rhamat Alhassan and Allie Monserez picked up SEC weekly honors after guiding the Gators to four wins in the last week of play. Florida (10-1) begins SEC play this week at Ole Miss and Alabama.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The No. 7 Florida volleyball squad added four wins in the last week of play thanks in part to SEC Setter of the Week Allie Monserez and Co-Defensive Player of the Week Rhamat Alhassan. The Orange and Blue, 10-1 on the season, downed No. 13 FSU Wednesday in Tallahassee before finally opening at home with three wins against FAMU, Jacksonville and Marshall in the Active Ankle Challenge.

UF opens SEC play this week riding a 10-match win streak and is undefeated both home and on the road so far in 2016, its lone loss a neutral-site match against 2015 national champion Nebraska.

Monserez, the SEC leader with 12.12 assists per set, continues to roll after taking over UF setting duties this season. UF leads the SEC and ranks second in the nation in hitting efficiency (.348). In addition to her ball distribution, Monserez has displayed her own offense and defense at times, contributed behind the service line and at the net with improved blocking. The redshirt sophomore posted her first double-double as a Gator against Marshall Saturday with a career high 53 assists and 12 digs in just four sets of play. Monserez put up a season-tying 3.5 points against the Rattlers with two kills and three block assists. Florida hit .300 or above in all three Active Ankle Challenge matches, including a .402 clip against FAMU.

Alhassan's SEC-leading .415 hitting efficiency and 1.41 blocks per set on the season are both a reflection of an impressive week of play for Florida's team captain. Not only did Alhassan post season best 18-point matches against both the Seminoles and Herd, but the 6-4 middle had her top two blocking matches this season with seven roofs at FSU and eight against Marshall, contributing to 17 and 15-block matches for the Gators, respectively, against the Seminoles and Thundering Herd. Alhassan paced the Gators with 1.75 blocks per set (21 total) last week.

The Orange and Blue will look to ride momentum from the first portion of the schedule into SEC play this week at Ole Miss and Alabama.
