Gators Recruiting Class Ranked No. 6 By Collegiate Baseball
Monday, September 26, 2016 | Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Florida Gators have compiled the nation's sixth-best recruiting class for 2016, according to Collegiate Baseball's annual evaluation of all NCAA Division I baseball classes, released on Monday.
UF's class ranked third in the Southeastern Conference and first among in-state programs. The ranking marks eight straight years in the top eight under head coach Kevin O'Sullivan.
Of the 12 newcomers, six players were selected in the 2016 professional draft, matching the third-highest number of drafted players ever to enroll in school (2013-8, 2014-7, 2015-6). The groups includes 11 freshman and one junior college transfer.
Six Gators who were selected in June's Draft enrolled in school during the summer along with six other signees. Austin Bodrato, a native of New Jersey, was the highest selected signee in the Draft after being taken in the 24th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Austin Langworthy from nearby Williston was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 31st round and Andrew Baker was chosen in the 36th round by the Cleveland Indians.
Junior college transfer David Lee, who attended Santa Fe Community College, was drafted in the 38th round by the San Francisco Giants. Garrett Milchin (39th round/Detroit Tigers) and Nate Brown (40th round/New York Yankees) were the final signees drafted.
The rankings are based on players who enroll at school each fall. Athletes who initially signed letters of intent with a school but then signed a pro contract after being drafted do not count in the overall evaluation.
Florida went 52-16 last season and reached the College World Series for the fifth time in the past seven years. The Gators earned a top-eight national seed for NCAA play for the seventh time in eight years, the best mark of any school in the country.
UF is scheduled to begin fall practice on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at McKethan Stadium and will open its 2017 season in February.
