Gators Collect First Win of Year at Windon Memorial Classic
Monday, September 26, 2016 | Men's Golf
GLENVIEW, Ill. – The University of Florida men's golf team shot a five-over 293 on Monday to hold off the rest of the field en route to winning the 2016 Windon Memorial Classic.
This win makes the Orange and Blue two-for-two at the tournament, as they won in their only other appearance in 1995. The Gators totaled 861 strokes, finishing the tournament at three-under, seven strokes ahead of the second-place Eastern Michigan.
Three Gators ended the tournament in the top ten:
Sophomore Gordon Neale led the way for Florida on day three, shooting an even-par 72 and finishing at four-under for the tournament, tied for second place individually.
Freshman Andy Zhang finished his Gators debut with a 75, putting him at three-under for the tournament, good enough to earn sixth place. Sophomore Ryan Celano closed out his tournament with a 74 to finish one-over and ended up in a tie for eighth.
Michigan's Kyle Walker shot a five-under 67 to clinch the individual title, finishing at seven-under.
Associate Head Coach John Handrigan:
(on the team's victory) "It was a perfect day for Gator golf because we had to handle the adversity of the weather. There were 30-plus mile per hour winds. There was one point in the day where we were leading at the time and the rules officials were talking about canceling the day because of the wind and the balls were rolling on the green. I was upset because they wanted to call it and they asked why I was upset because we were leading the tournament. I said because I want our team to go through the adversity of the wind and trying to win the tournament, so that was a great part for us. We had to go through the wind and adversity and also hold off Eastern Michigan who played a great round of golf."
(on Andy Zhang's performance in his debut tournament) "Andy is a phenomenal player and we were lucky to get him in the lineup. Not only is Andy's game impressive, but his attitude and demeanor on the course are as well. He is very mature for a freshman and there's no surprise why he's so successful. He was a pleasure to coach this week."
(on how the win helps them going into the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational) "This provided some confidence that we could win and pull off a strong win and we're prepared now to work hard this week to get ready for this weekend in Texas."
