The award recognizes the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the country
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Redshirt junior punter Johnny Townsend was named as one of 156 semifinalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation and is prominently displayed inside its official home at the New York Athletic Club.
Townsend is averaging 49.5 yards per punt this season, which is the sixth-best average among all FBS punters. He has played in 24 games in his career, logging 129 punts for 5,824 punt yards. He has placed 34 punts inside the 20, and has recorded 44 punts longer than 50 yards.
Townsend boasts a 3.25 grade point average as a Telecommunications (Management) major and has been involved in eight different community service initiatives during his time as a Gator. The Orlando native is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll,
Nine semifinalists are from the SEC, including Arkansas' Brooks Ellis, Auburn's Alex Kozan, Kentucky's Jon Toth, Ole Miss' Nathan Noble, Mississippi State's Richie Brown, Missouri's Sean Culkin, South Carolina's Perry Orth and Tennessee's Dylan Wiesman.
Three Gators have won the William V. Campbell Trophy, Brad Culpepper in 1991, Danny Wuerffel in 1996 and Tim Tebow in 2009.
The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Nov. 1, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, presented by Fidelity Investments.
The finalists will travel to New York City for the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 6, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. At the event, one member of the class will be declared the winner of the 27th William V. Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.
Named in honor of the late Bill Campbell, former chairman of Intuit, former player and head coach at Columbia University and the 2004 recipient of the NFF's Gold Medal, the Campbell Trophy is a 25-pound bronze trophy and increases the amount of the recipient's grant by $7,000 for a total postgraduate scholarship of $25,000. This year's postgraduate scholarships will push the program's all-time distribution to more than $11.1 million.
