ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – University of Florida senior Kelly Grassel won the 2017 South Atlantic Women's Amateur Championship at the Oceanside Country Club on Saturday. She finished the tournament at eight-under (280) after four rounds of play.
This was the fifth win of her career and her first win since February, where she tied for first at the Florida Challenge.
Grassel led the field after the first two rounds, but was overtaken by her teammate, Sam Wagner, on Friday. Grassel began the final round in a tie for second at five-under (211). She shot three-under (69) in the final round to win the prestigious amateur tournament.
"I really enjoyed my experience this week, especially getting to play with my teammates. Their talent and competitiveness pushes me and I'm a better player because of them. I think all four of us represented the Gator Nation well, and we are excited for this season," Grassel said.
Senior Maria Torres finished in second place at seven-under (281). She moved up two spots in the final round shooting three-under (69) on Saturday. Sophomore Sam Wagner finished the tournament in a tie for third at five-under (283) and junior Taylor Tomlinson finished in a tie for 19th place, shooting 12-over (300) for the tournament.
"It was an awesome week playing but also representing the Gator Nation at the tournament. I think we did a great job. There was some really good competition at the tournament, and it was a great way to start the year," Torres said.
The Gators look to take this momentum into their season opener. Florida begins its spring season on January 30 at the Florida Challenge in Tampa, Fla.
Florida Scores:
1. Kelly Grassel -8 (280)
2. Maria Torres -7 (281)
5. Sam Wagner -5 (283)
T19. Taylor Tomlinson +12 (300)
