Bates, Owens Lead Gators on Opening Night of Razorback Invitational
Friday, January 27, 2017 | Track and Field
Aaron Owens had the best pole vault clearance by a Gator in 14 years, while KeAndre Bates improved his No. 3-ranked Division I long jump mark
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Florida continued its nation-leading success on the men's side, but the women's team was, in the words of head coach Mike Holloway, "a little off" Friday (Jan. 27) night at the Razorback Invitational.
Despite missing the board multiple times, junior KeAndre Bates broke off three jumps of 7.72-plus meters, including an event-winning mark of 7.84 meters (25 feet, 8.75 inches) in the long jump. The El Paso, Texas native strengthened his hold on the No. 3-ranked mark in Division I, improving his season best by two centimeters.
The most surprising performance of the night came from redshirt junior pole vaulter Aaron Owens. After needing two runs to match his indoor personal record of 5.21 meters (17 feet, 1 inch), Owens easily cleared 5.36 meters (17 feet, 7 inches) on his first attempt.
Owens' mark ranks him No. 4 on UF's all-time indoor top 10, in addition to it being the highest clearance by a Gator since Paul Condron and Brian DaChuna both cleared 5.40 meters (17 feet, 8.5 inches) in 2003. It ranks him 12th in Division I this season as well.
Freshman Clayton Brown, the national leader in the high jump, took third place, bowing out at 2.19 meters (7 feet, 2.25 inches). Brown and NCAA Outdoor Championships winner Randall Cunningham both topped out at 2.19 meters, though the latter's first-run clearance at 2.16 meters broke the tie, leaving Brown in third.
Sophomore Yanis David had the top performance for the women, tying her season best of 6.14 meters (20 feet, 1.75 inches) to take sixth in the long jump.
SEC Network will televise Saturday's (Jan. 28) action from 2-5:30 p.m. ET. A full meet schedule for Saturday and complete listing of Friday's results are below.
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Coach Holloway on the performances tonight…
"The whole thing about tonight was I thought the men competed well. That's the third-highest jump of Clayton's life. KeAndre (Bates) with the win. And Aaron (Owens) with a PR in the pole vault. Thought they all did a great job, came out and competed hard, and competed very well in a tough competition.
"The women, we seemed to be a little off tonight. We are much better than we showed tonight on the women's side. We've just got to figure out what's going on. We didn't do very well in the long jump, then Destinee (Gause) disqualified in the 200. That's not any indication of her talent level or her fitness level.
"But, overall, it was a good night. We've got a lot more things going on tomorrow. We've got to come out tomorrow and get after it a little bit."
Holloway on whether he got a sense for where the team is at heading into a huge day of competition tomorrow…
"I'll get a better sense of it tomorrow during our pre-meets and things like that. They know what kind of a meet it is. They got a chance to watch what was going on tonight, and they understand, hey, it's serious. Everybody else is taking it seriously; we better take it seriously as well."
