Eric Futch won the first NCAA and SEC 400 hurdles titles by a Gator since three-time Olympic medalist Kerron Clement (2005)
NEW ORLEANS – University of Florida redshirt senior hurdler and sprinter Eric Futch has been named to The Bowerman Award Preseason Watch List, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Thursday (Jan. 5) afternoon.
Futch, the reigning NCAA and Southeastern Conference champion in the 400-meter hurdles, is one of the top returners for the Gators, who bring back 39 of the 49 individual points from last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships-winning team.
The Darby, Pa. native ran the fastest 400 hurdles time during last year's collegiate season (48.91), moving him up to No. 3 on Florida's all-time outdoor top 10.
FUTCH'S 2016 SEASON SUMMARY
Futch, a seven-time USTFCCCA All-American, is looking to become the eighth man in history to win consecutive 400 hurdles national titles. Washington State's Jeshua Anderson (2008-09) was the last to do it, while Gator Great, 2016 Olympic 400 hurdles gold medalist, and 400 hurdles collegiate record holder Kerron Clement (2004-05) is the only Gator to accomplish the feat.
Ten semifinalists for The Bowerman, collegiate track and field's highest individual honor, will be named following the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The three finalists will be announced roughly two weeks later.
Gator Great and seven-time national champion Marquis Dendy won The Bowerman in 2015, while fellow Gator Greats and Olympic gold medalists Christian Taylor (2011) and Tony McQuay (2012) were both finalists.
Futch and the Gators open the season Saturday (Jan. 7) at the Orange & Purple Classic, hosted by Clemson.
