Young Players Run Through Pro Competition
Sunday, January 8, 2017 | Men's Tennis
PLANTATION, Fla. – Three Gators will move on to the final qualifying round of the USA F3 Futures tournament, a section of the ITF Pro Circuit.
Freshman Johannes Ingildsen, junior Chase Perez-Blanco and sophomore Alfredo Perez are the last Gators standing at the tournament. They've each won their first three respective matches of the qualifying round, and one more win for each of them will put them in the main draw of the pro tournament.
Perez, who currently holds the highest national rank among the Florida men's tennis team at No. 13, rolled through the first three rounds of competition. He didn't give up more than one point in the second set of each of his last two matches, and defeated Govind Nanda (USA), the player who knocked fellow Gator Jordan Belga out of the competition in the second round.
Ingildsen and Perez-Blanco will both face top-seeded competition in the final qualifying round, making their road to the main draw just that much harder. Ingildsen will face No. 2 Hunter Callahan (USA), a former Ohio State Buckeye, and Perez-Blanco will square off against No. 4 Genaro Alberto Olivieri (ARG).
Quoting Head Coach Bryan Shelton
"Three of our guys are in the last round of qualifying tomorrow, so hopefully we can have another great day tomorrow. The competition has been great here and is certainly helping us prepare for our upcoming dual season."
