GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Three-time All-American Rhamat Alhassan was named the Southeastern Conference Co- Defensive Player of the Week for a second week in a row, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Alhassan totaled 12 blocks in five sets, helping Florida to a pair of sweeps last weekend. With her first block last week, an assisted stuff, the Glenarden, Md., native broke Benavia Jenkins' (2000-03) school record for career block assists (503). Alhassan, now with 512 block assists to her name, could break Jenkins' school record for career total blocks (601) as early as Wednesday, when the No. 4 Gators travel to No. 6 Kentucky. She enters that match with 594 career total bocks.
Alhassan's stout weekend also moved her into a tie for first nationally in blocks per set (1.77).
The senior middle blocker is one of three players in the nation averaging at least 1.70 blocks per set and a .355 hitting percentage this year. Only one player since 2010 (Haley Warner, BYU, 2012) finished a season with such averages.
The Gators (18-1, 10-1 SEC) and Wildcats will meet in Lexington for what will be the fourth top-10 matchup in SEC history, as well as the second such matchup between the two teams this season. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, with ESPNU providing television coverage and ESPN Gainesville 98.1 FM / 850 AM broadcasting via radio.
