Alert Today Florida to provide 1,000 free bike helmets to promote bike and scooter safety.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Help the Gators break a world record on Thursday when they host North Florida at Exactech Arena.
Alert Today Florida is providing 1,000 bike helmets in an effort to help break the record for the most people wearing helmets in one area. Bring a helmet to the O'Dome on Thursday to be a part of the more than 4,000 people needed to be put in the Guinness Book of World Records.
As a part of the helmet promotion, Alert Today Florida and the UPD are helping spread the message of bike and scooter safety as well as the importance of the use of helmets. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, helmets are about 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and about 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries.
According to UPD data, 59 percent of crashes on campus involving motorcycle/scooters from 2013-2016 involved injuries while 84 percent of scooter drivers involved in a crash had no helmet/or it was unknown if they were wearing a helmet.
