UF garners one first-team selection; five second-team selections.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Six Gators were named to The Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference team, as announced on Monday. Johnny Townsend was named first-team All-SEC, while Martez Ivey, Eddy Pineiro, Taven Bryan, Duke Dawson and CJ Henderson all nabbed second-team honors.
Townsend was tabbed as the Gators' lone first-team selection after leading the SEC in punting average with 47.6 yards per punt. He registered 3,043 yards on 64 punts this season, including 27 punts inside the 20-yard line and 27 punts of over 50 yards. During the season, he moved into first place in UF history for total yards (11,090) and career punts (240).
Ivey garnered second-team honors after helping the Gators average 335.9 yards of offense per game. With his help, Lamical Perine and Malik Davis each eclipsed 500 rushing yards on the year.
Pineiro grabbed second-team accolades after finishing the season making 17 of 18 field goal attempts, including 16 straight to finish the year. Through two seasons, Pineiro has converted on 38-of-43 attempts, putting him first in UF's history with a field goal percentage of 88.4%. The redshirt junior made history against UAB, becoming the first Florida Gator to make two 50-plus yard field goals in a game. Also in that game he became the first Florida kicker to make five field goals in one game since Jan. 1, 1992 when Arden Czyzewski made five against Norte Dame in the Sugar Bowl.
Bryan finished the season with 40 tackles, including six tackles-for-loss. He notched four sacks for a loss of 22 yards and forced three quarterback hurries over the course of the year.
Dawson recorded four interceptions this season, including a pick-six that he ran back for 48 yards against Michigan. The four interceptions tie him with Henderson as the most on the Gator squad. The senior also registered 34 tackles, including two tackles-for-loss, as well as nine pass breakups.
Henderson earned second-team honors in his first season as a Gator after recording four interceptions, running two of them back for touchdowns. He became the first Gator since 1980 to record a pick-six in back-to-back games. Since 1996, Henderson is the only true freshman in the nation to have returned interceptions for touchdowns in consecutive games. The freshman also recorded 22 tackles on the year.
