Holloway joined elite company once again, while Owens vaulted himself into the mix for an NCAA Indoors berth
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Florida's Grant Holloway (60 hurdles), Aaron Owens (pole vault), and Taylor Tubbs (5,000 meters) all posted times and marks that rank No. 2 on the program's all-time indoor top 10, including a national lead by Holloway, Friday (Feb. 10) night.
Holloway took the Tyson Invitational title with a time of 7.58 seconds, tying collegiate record holder Omar McLeod for the second-fastest time by a Division I freshman since 2003. McLeod's time of 7.57 in the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships preliminary is the only one faster. And since 2002, five of the seven men to break 7.60 prior to NCAA Indoors went on to win the national title that year, including Gator Great and school record holder Eddie Lovett (2013).
The Chesapeake, Va. native's time topped the national lead of 7.61 and topped his previous season-best of 7.63, which was already the No. 2-ranked time on UF's top 10 list.
Owens turned in far and away the best performance of his career, clearing heights of 5.10, 5.20, and 5.30 meters on his first run. He continued with a personal record and fourth straight first-run clearance at 5.40 meters (17 feet, 8.5 inches).
The mark is tied for 14th nationally, in addition to it matching Paul Condron (2003) and Brian DaChuna (2003) for the second-best mark on the Gators' top 10.
At the Iowa State Classic, Tubbs clocked a 27-second personal record (16:13.08) to pass everyone in school history except Rebecca Lowe (15:59.46; Feb. 12, 2010).
Tyson Invitational action will be streamed live via SEC Network +. A complete schedule and table of results for this weekend is below.
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on the team's performances at Tyson Invitational tonight…
"Thought we had a good day. Grant Holloway, great run and a new PR for him (in the 60 hurdles), then coming back and getting second in the long jump. Thought we were solid in all the field events. I know Coach (Steve) Lemke is disappointed with the weight throw and thought they could have thrown a little farther, but I trust him that he will have them ready to come through when we need them the most.
"Thought we had some improvement in the 400s. We continue to struggle a little bit in the 60, but we've just got to keep working there and getting better. Very proud of Aaron Owens and his PR in the pole vault. Michael Harris was very competitive as well. Overall, we had a good day. We've got to come back tomorrow and, I think, be a little bit more intense. The other teams were a little more intense than we were tonight, so I think we need to step it up a little bit tomorrow to get a little better."
Holloway on the performances at Iowa State Classic tonight…
"Want to congratulate Taylor Tubbs on a huge PR and our No. 2 time in school history. Phenomenal night for her. Thought Hannah Brookover and Becky Greene did a good job in the mile, and Maddox (Patterson) with a big PR in the 3k. Great to see Lauren Perry run a solid race as well.
