Pair of Midweek Games on Tap For Gators

After opening the season with a sweep over William & Mary, the Gators will face Jacksonville in a pair of midweek contests before hosting rival Miami this weekend.

KEY NOTES OF WEEK:

  • Florida opened the season with a three-game sweep of 2016 CAA Tournament Champion William & Mary in Gainesville.
  • After scraping out a 5-4 win in the opener, the Gators cruised to 8-1 and 11-6 wins in the final two games.
  • Offensively, UF hit .311 and scored 24 runs in the series with four home runs…The Gators also stole 8 bases, more than they stole in any three-game series last season.
  • On the mound, Florida had a 3.00 ERA but an outstanding .188 batting average against…The Gators also tallied 37 strikeouts, more than all but one series in 2016, with just nine walks.
  • Freshman Austin Langworthy led the way offensive with a .444 average (4-for-9)…Junior Dalton Guthrie was a catalyst as always with a .417 average (5-for-12) with five runs scored…Jonathan India, Deacon Liput and JJ Schwarz each had four RBI over the weekend to lead the team.
  • On the mound, Brady Singer and Jackson Kowar picked up the wins on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, with a combined two earned runs allowed in 10.2 innings pitched while racking up 16 strikeouts…Sophomore Michael Byrne picked up the win in the opener with three shutout innings in relief allowing just one hit.

STAR OF THE WEEK: 37245

Austin Langworthy (pictured right), from nearby Williston, hit .444 over three games (4-for-9) with a homer, a double and two RBI. He also pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief with a pair of strikeouts and no walks. In the finale, he had three hits including the homer and double.
 
Langworthy exploded onto the scene with an impressive sixth inning in game two, when he came on to pitch in relief and had a scoreless inning on the mound before recording his first career hit and stolen base in the bottom half of the inning.
