Alfredo Perez Named SEC Player of the Week
Wednesday, February 8, 2017 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Southeastern Conference announced Florida sophomore Alfredo Perez as the SEC Player of the Week on Wednesday. This is Perez's first Player of the Week recognition and fourth weekly SEC honor, after receiving the Freshman of the Week honor three times last season.
Perez picked up two singles wins in the No. 1 position over the weekend, earning the first point for the Gators in their win against No. 8 USC, and clinching the match point in No. 11 Florida's upset over No. 6 UCLA. With those wins, he improved to a 5-0 dual singles record and a 12-3 overall singles record for the season.
Against Southern California, Perez defeated No. 28 Logan Smith 6-1, 6-2 in only 58 minutes, helping shift the momentum of the match back to the Gators after losing the doubles point. Against UCLA, the Gators were once again able to come back from dropping the doubles point, and Alfredo clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 11 Gage Brymer – a player he had lost to previously at the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Perez has also shined in the doubles competition this season, as he and his partner Johannes Ingildsen have notched a 10-2 overall doubles record for the 2016-17 season.
