INDIANAPOLIS – The UF men's team will return to the IU Natatorium in a few hours for the third finals session of the NCAA Championships, advancing four individual swimmers and one relay.
With one more finals session to go after tonight, Florida ranks third in the team standings with 138.5 points and trails second-place California by 4.5 points.
From this morning's prelims:
400 IM
Four Gators led off the day in the 400 IM. Andrew Brady opened with a second-place finish in the first heat, going 3:48.07 to place 29th overall and improve .44 seconds on his seed time. Brennan Balogh followed up in heat 2, touching in 3:49.34 to finish seventh in his heat and 32nd in the field.
In heat 4 were Alex Lebed and Mark Szaranek. Lebed finished eighth in the heat and 26th overall at 3:46.21, while Szaranek won in 3:38.55. Paralleling yesterday's 200 IM final, he'll take the three-seed heading into tonight's championship final.
100 fly
Caeleb Dressel handled the sprint butterfly for Florida, competing in heat 5. He won the heat in 44.49 and earned the two-seed for tonight's championship final, his second individually in as many nights.
200 free
The 200 free featured a huge Florida presence, with five Gators scheduled to compete. Khader Baqlah placed seventh in heat 5 at 1:34.31, finishing in 24th overall. Mitch D'Arrigo placed second in heat 3 at 1:33.89, cutting his seed time to finish 19th.
Ben Lawless and Jan Switkowski both swam in heat 2. Lawless finished fourth in the heat and 33rd overall at 1:36.06, shaving .07 seconds off his seed time. Switkowski won the heat in 1:33.39, 1.02 seconds quicker than his seed time. Finishing 10th overall, he has earned a spot in tonight's consolation final.
Maxime Rooney will be one of three freshmen to compete in the championship final. He finished second in heat 4 to earn the final's six-seed at 1:32.88.
100 breast
A pair of young Gators in Chandler Bray and Ross Palazzo competed in breaststroke. Bray, swimming in heat 3, placed eighth in the heat and 35th overall at 53.18. Palazzo improved on his seed time by .55 seconds to touch fourth in the opening heat at 54.09. He finished 44th overall.
200 medley relay
Florida sent out Jack Blyzinskyj, Bray, Szaranek and Dressel as the prelims' lineup. The Gators placed third in the second heat and fourth overall, touching in 1:23.37.
Also of note, Dressel's 17.71 anchoring freestyle split marked the fastest relay split of all-time. He'd previously tied the then-fastest split of 17.86 at the SEC Championships last month.
Florida continues NCAAs with 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free and 200 medley relay finals tonight beginning at 6 p.m. ET.
