INDIANAPOLIS – Florida is primed for another top-3 national finish at the NCAA Championships and looks to lock up its spot at the NCAA finale tonight.
The Gators advanced two individuals to tonight's finals and the 400 free relay to the championship final. They'll also have a chance to score some points soon in the 1650 free – four distance Gators are set for the early mile heats later this afternoon.
The top four teams heading into tonight are as follows:
1. Texas (391.5 points)
2. California (253 points)
3. Florida (224.5 points)
4. NC State (196 points)
From this morning's prelims:
200 back
Brennan Balogh placed seventh in heat 4 and 26th overall at 1:42.06, capping his NCAA appearance.
100 free
Caeleb Dressel cruised to a win in heat 7 with a time of 41.00, a new best for him this season. He'll look to defend his national title in tonight's championship final as the top seed.
Khader Baqlah and Maxime Rooney preceded Dressel in the prelims. Baqlah placed third in heat 2 at 43.20, bettering his seed time by .16 seconds and placing 31st overall. Maxime Rooney finished seventh in heat 5 at 43.01 to place 28th overall.
200 breast
Competing in the opening heat, Alex Lebed finished fourth at 1:58.64, ending in 39th place overall. Chandler Bray followed up in the second heat, taking third with a time of 1:55.21. He cut .65 seconds off his time to finish 23rd overall. Ross Palazzo was close behind in 25h place, finishing third in heat 3 at 1:55.33.
200 fly
Jan Switkowski earned a trip to his third individual consolation final this week. He touched third in heat 4 and finished ninth overall with a time of 1:41.46. Having already won the 200 free and 200 IM B-finals, he could go 3-for-3 with another victory tonight.
Mark Szaranek was next for Florida in the sixth heat. He placed 22nd in the field with a time of 1:42.97.
400 free relay
Maxime Rooney, Switkowski, Szaranek and Dressel teamed up in the fourth heat of the relay, taking second in the heat and overall with a time of 2:47.90, a new IU Natatorium pool record. Florida's last shot at winning a relay title this week will come later tonight.
Platform
Samuel Smith dove off the towers for the first time at NCAAs. He placed 31st with a total score of 282.50.
1650 free
Four Gators will appear in the early heats of the 1650 free, which begin at 3:45 p.m. ET. The heats will run as timed finals, and final placements will be determined by times regardless of heats.
Florida wraps up its season with 100 free, 200 fly, and 400 free relay finals tonight beginning at 6 p.m. ET.
