World Top 25s, Miranda’s Huge PR Set Off Pepsi Florida Relays
Thursday, March 30, 2017 | Track and Field
Carlos Miranda clocked a 5,000 meters personal record that may be enough to qualify him for the NCAA East Preliminary
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 73rd annual Pepsi Florida Relays opened with a light schedule of events Thursday (March 30), but the day saw two world leads, a meet record, seven world top-25 times by Gators, and a pair of massive personal bests.
Redshirt junior Carlos Miranda capped day one with a 24-second personal record in the 5,000 meters, finishing third overall. Miranda's time of 14:25.42 ranks 23rd nationally.
Sophomore Maddox Patterson turned in a 14-second PR of 17:20.70 in the women's 5,000 meters.
Incoming freshman Kyron McMaster, who represented the British Virgin Islands, won the open 400-meter hurdles title in 48.71 seconds. McMaster's time ranks No. 2 in the world, would rank No. 3 on UF's all-time outdoor top 10, and was a mere 0.22 seconds off 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Bershawn Jackson's facility and Pepsi Florida Relays records.
Gator Great and two-time Olympic medalist Kerron Clement opened his outdoor campaign with a 46.01-second open 400 meters, finishing second to fellow Gator Great Najee Glass (45.84). Olympian and Gator Great Calvin Smith (46.16) took fourth. All three times rank inside the world top 25.
Three other recent Gator student-athletes—Claudia Francis (400 meters), Robin Reynolds (400 meters), and Ugonna Ndu (400-meter hurdles)—logged top-15 world times.
The two world leads came from 8-time Olympic medalist Veronica Campbell-Brown (200 meters) and Leah Nugent (400 hurdles). The meet record came from Miami Southridge's Kayla Johnson in the high school 800 meters final.
While the vast majority of collegiate competitions begin Friday (March 31), last year's World Indoor Championships gold medalist Marquis Dendy, 2013 World Championships qualifier Cory McGee, Olympic 110-meter hurdler Eddie Lovett, two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time World Championships gold medalist Christian Taylor, as well as 2016 Olympic 4x400 relay gold medalists Arman Hall and Tony McQuay will all compete this weekend as well.
Friday's and Saturday's action will be streamed live on SEC Network +, via Watch ESPN. Results are provided by Delta Timing.
