Gators Take Early Lead at Mason Rudolph
Friday, March 31, 2017 | Men's Golf
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Florida's men's golf team was firing on all cylinders Friday as the Gators carded a 276 (-8) to sit at the top of the leaderboard following day one at the Mason Rudolph Championship
Four of the five players in UF's lineup shot a 69 (-2) in round one, with three tallying five or more birdies.
Sophomore Sam Horsfield shot a clean front nine, carding two birdies and no bogeys, while freshman Andy Zhang finished off his round with a three-birdie, bogey-free back nine.
Vanderbilt's Theo Humphrey tops the individual leaderboard after shooting a 66 (-5) on day one.
The Gators are back in action tomorrow at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tennessee, for round two at 10:10 a.m.
Head Coach J.C. Deacon
On his team's performance during the first day:
"Today was an awesome day. That momentum that we started to build up at the Schenkel Invitational definitely carried into today. We played as a team, everyone made big contributions, both score-wise and energy-wise, and they were all there together pulling for each other. It's just so much fun when it happens like that. It's amazing, when we conduct ourselves in a positive manner, our scores seem to follow. That's going to continue to be the goal going forward."
On Andy Zhang's performance carding a bogey-free back nine after four straight bogeys to finish the front nine:
"Andy is such a talented player and he's got so much good in his game. He makes so many birdies and that's pretty much the standard for him every week. He's got to stop making mistakes. He had four bogeys today and that's too many, he's too good of a player for that. We talked about after and he'll clean in up tomorrow and when he gets rid of those mistakes and he gets all of those birdies to count, it's going to be scary."
On what the team needs to do tomorrow to continue playing well:
"Keep supporting each other, keep pushing each other to be better. We played great today and if we could have three days just like that, we'll have a pretty good chance to win. Today was one of the best days that we've had since this team has come together."
