Gators Fall to Wildcats in 4-1 Upset

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 12 Florida men's tennis team lost a taxing indoor battle to the No. 24 Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday afternoon (April 1st), losing the doubles point and three singles matches for a final team score of 4-1. This loss breaks a five-match win streak for Florida, advancing it to a 6-2 SEC record (13-7 overall).
In doubles play, Elliott Orkin and Maxx Lipman earned a ranked doubles win, defeating No. 77 Bushamuka/Ellefsen 6-3. Joshua Wardell and Chase Perez-Blanco started off leading Kentucky's Benson/Yates, but fell 6-3 in the end.
With the doubles point in the hands of court 1, No. 6 Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen battled with No. 27 Pennington/Wallart, tying at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 and eventually 6-6, before losing the tiebreaker to give the Wildcats the doubles point.
In the singles competition, Perez-Blanco was defeated early by UK's Pennington, falling 6-3, 6-1 to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. No. 106 Orkin earned a huge ranked win in the second position, defeating No. 24 Matsumura 6-1, 6-3 to give Florida its sole team point.
In the first singles position, No. 7 Perez fell to No. 17 Bushamuka 7-5, 6-0 to give Kentucky a 3-1 lead. With the Wildcats looking for a win on court 4 to clinch the match, Ingildsen and No. 113 Ellefsen split the first two sets and ended the third in a tiebreak. Ellefsen won the tiebreak to defeat Ingildsen 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 to clinch the match for Kentucky.

Florida will head home for a few days before traveling to Georgia on Friday, April 7th and Tennessee on Sunday, April 9th.
Georgia, the 2016 regular-season SEC Champion, is currently undefeated in conference play. The Gators defeated the Bulldogs in the final round of the 2016 SEC Tournament to win the title. Florida also hosted the Bulldogs earlier this season, although they did not play each other, as both teams took on USC and UCLA. Florida defeated the two ranked teams while Georgia fell to both. Georgia holds a 62-40-1 record in the series.
The last time the Gators saw the Volunteers was last season in Gainesville, where Florida won 6-1 in its last match of the regular season. Florida holds a 40-26 record in the series.
