Gators Tally Two National Leads, Bundle of Top 10s at Tom Jones Memorial
Friday, April 28, 2017 | Track and Field
Florida capped its regular season with numerous high-end performances
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Last one, best one is the mantra of Florida's track and field program, and its last meet of the regular season certainly qualified as one of its best this year.
The Gators posted 14 times and marks that rank in the NCAA Division I top 30, including a pair of national leads and five national top 10s. That number does not include a handful of marks that should put Gators in contention for, if not outright clinching NCAA East Preliminary berths.
Florida's NCAA leads came from senior TJ Holmes (400-meter hurdles) and junior KeAndre Bates (triple jump).
Holmes clocked in at 49.19 seconds, topping the fastest time in the nation this year by 0.21 seconds. It also made him the No. 5-ranked 400 hurdler in program history. Bates leapt to a wind-legal 16.70 meters (54 feet, 9.5 inches), usurping the national leader by a centimeter and improving his own No. 5-ranked mark on the program's All-Time Outdoor Top 10.
Another blistering performance on the track came from redshirt senior Kyra Jefferson, who ran a wind-legal 22.57 in her first 200 meters of the season. The 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships winner's time ranks No. 4 nationally.
Florida also saw national top 10s in the form of Lloydricia Cameron (shot put), Yanis David (long jump), Grant Holloway (110 hurdles), Darrielle McQueen (long jump).
The Gators posted 11 times and marks to the program's All-Time Top 10. In addition to the aforementioned performances from Bates, Cameron, Holloway, Holmes, and McQueen, the following Gators cracked or improved their standing on UF's list: Andres Arroyo (1,500 meters), Brandee' Johnson (100 hurdles), AJ McFarland (hammer throw), Skylar Ross-Ransom (100 hurdles), Taylor Tubbs (1,500 meters), and the women's 4x100 relay team of Ross-Ransom, Shayla Sanders, Destinee Gause, and Johnson.
A pair of Gator Greats posted IAAF World Championships qualifying standards, with U.S. Virgin Islander Eddie Lovett (110 hurdles) effectively clinching his spot. Nigerian 400 hurdler Ugonna Ndu set a personal best of 56.01 en route to breaking the standard.
Florida returns to action May 11-13, when it competes at SEC Outdoor Championships in Columbia, S.C.
HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Head coach Mike Holloway on Florida's day as a whole….
"Thought we had a very good day overall. We've got some things we've been working hard on, and it was good to see people come out here and execute the things we were working on. TJ Holmes and Andres Arroyo—big performances by them. The women's jumpers—Yanis (David) and Darrielle (McQueen)—did a wonderful job as well. A guy like AJ (McFarland) comes out with a big PB in the hammer, and throws the college discus further than he threw in high school. Jack Guyton in the 800, very proud of the women's hurdlers.
"It's hard to find a place I wasn't happy, to be honest. I challenged them Wednesday to come out, work hard, and embrace the situation. I think they did that."
Holloway on the relay performance today…
"The thing with the 4x1 is you always want to get the stick around. We've got some work to do to move the stick a little better on the anchor leg. Really pleased with the women. To run 43.5 without Kyra was a special run. Both 4x4s I thought did a wonderful job, and Sharrika Barnett coming around with a big 50-second split today."
Holloway on what the Gators need to do heading into SEC Championships in two weeks…
"A lot of rest, a lot of sharpening. Most importantly, we've got to stay humble; we've got to focus. We can't come away from this meet thinking we've arrived, because we haven't. We're in the toughest league in America. No one is going to lay down for us or give us anything in two weeks. We just have to make sure we're sharp, mentally, physically, and emotionally when we get to South Carolina in a couple weeks."
