Installation of a permanent 3D court projection system at Exactech Arena was a tiny part of the $128 million among items approved.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University Athletic Association's Board of Directors signed off Monday on a record $128 million budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year that includes operating expenses of more than $29 million of support services to UF student athletes and $14 million in funding for student-athlete scholarships.
In addition, the UAA received additional revenue for fiscal year 2016-17 from the SEC Network and Fox/IMG sponsorship and royalty revenue as well, the Gators also will a onetime $6 million guarantee for playing Michigan on Sept. 2 in the 2017 AdvoCare Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with those funds going to the football program and to enhance the football fan experience.
Highlighting the new expenditures is the permanent installation of a 3D arena projection system at a cost of $350,000. The system was rented for the Florida-Kentucky basketball showdown Feb. 4 and drew rave reviews in what became an 88-66 victory for the Gators that represented the most lopsided UF win in the series history. Permanent installation of the system will allow it to be used for select men's and women's basketball games, as well as gymnastics meets and volleyball matches.
Other items approved include:
* LED ribbon boards wrapping the fascia of the end zones of Steve Spurrier/Florida Field, plus additional stadium scoreboards and drink rails in the end zones.
* A new scoreboard for the swimming and diving programs.
* Updated graphics throughout the UF athletic facilities.
The proposed budget was submitted earlier in the day to the UAA Finance Committee, which approved and forwarded it to the UAA Board for final ratification.
The UAA is currently in the process of designing over $100 million of capital projects — which will be funded from private contributions and a new bond issue — including construction of a stand-alone football facility, a dining hall for all student athletes, as well as expansion and renovation to both the McKethan Stadium baseball and Pressly Stadium softball complex.
