GAINESVILLE, Fla.--A trio of Gators juniors have been selected on Day 2 of the 2017 MLB Draft on Tuesday.
Florida shortstop Dalton Guthrie was selected in the sixth round by the Philadelphia Phillies. Catcher Mike Rivera was selected shortly after by the Cleveland Indians and Mark Kolozsvary was the second pick of the seventh round by the Cincinnati Reds.
Guthrie is the seventh middle infielder drafted in 10 seasons under head coach Kevin O'Sullivan. The last was shortstop Richie Martin, a first round selection in 2015. Rivera and Kolozsvary are the sixth and seventh catchers drafted under O'Sullivan.
Out of high school, Guthrie was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 40th round. Rivera was drafted by the Oakland A's in the 33rd round of the 2014 draft following his high school career at Venice High School.
Guthrie, a native of Sarasota, is a two-time SEC All-Defensive Selection and has a .289 career batting average in 195 career starts. In his junior season, Guthrie has been a defensive standout and has hit .272 despite battling a nagging arm injury in the middle of the season. He has a career-high four home runs and 22 RBIs.
Rivera was hampered by a broken hamate bone in 2017 but was a Second Team All-SEC selection in his sophomore season. Rivera has a .241 average this season with a pair of home runs and 24 RBIs. In his career, he's totaled 14 homers and 119 RBIs with a .254 batting average while playing SEC All-Defensive calibar defense.
Kolozsvary, while not an everyday player, has flashed his potential while filling in for Rivera this season. In 16 SEC games this season, Kolozsvary hit .320 with 13 RBI while throwing out five of seven attempted base stealers.
6th Round - Dalton Guthrie, Philadelphia Phillies (173rd overall)
6th Round - Mike Rivera, Cleveland Indians (192nd overall)
7th Round - Mark Kolozsvary, Cincinnati Reds (197th overall)
27th Round - David Lee, Pittsburgh Pirates (808th overall)
